Week 7

For this project, I decided to use an old resume that I created several years ago. I purposely chose an older version instead of creating a new resume because I thought it would be interesting to see how much AI could improve something I had already written. I asked it to make the resume more professional and organized while only using the information that was already included. I specifically did not want it adding any of my newer work experience or accomplishments because I wanted to be able to compare the old document to the AI version.

ChatGPT immediately noticed several things that could be improved. My old resume had long paragraphs describing my responsibilities, inconsistent formatting, and information that probably did not need to be included. It reorganized my experience, turned my longer descriptions into bullet points, and made the wording more direct. I went back and forth with ChatGPT to make sure it stayed close to my original resume and did not add information that was not there. I also wanted the writing to still sound somewhat like me instead of becoming overly professional or sounding like something I would never say.

Overall, I was happy with the AI document. Looking back at my old resume made me realize how much my professional writing has changed. The information itself was basically the same, but the way ChatGPT presented it made the resume much easier to read. One thing I thought AI did especially well was organizing the information for the audience. Instead of making an employer read through paragraphs to figure out what I did at each job, the revised version made my responsibilities much easier to find. This relates to what we have discussed throughout the semester about considering your audience and making communication clear and useful for the person actually reading it.

There were also things that I did not completely agree with. Some of the wording ChatGPT originally gave me sounded too professional or generic and did not really sound like me. I took out my address, phone numbers and birthday for this assignment in general, but when it requested to take it out all together, I do think that is something that is needed on a resume so I probably would have kept that. I had to also make changes and ask it to stay closer to my original wording. This was probably the biggest weakness I noticed while using AI. It can make writing sound polished very quickly, but polished does not always mean personal or accurate. I still had to be the one deciding what information should stay, what should be changed, and whether the final document actually represented me.

The process was easier and faster than I expected. It was helpful to already have an old document to start with because I could directly compare what I originally wrote with what AI suggested. I think the final version follows the best practices we have discussed in class better than my original. It is more concise, consistent, organized, and focused on what an employer would actually need to know. At the same time, the exercise showed me that AI cannot completely understand the writer or the situation on its own.

Another limitation is that the finished resume is still technically outdated. I intentionally told ChatGPT not to add anything that was not on my old resume, so even though the writing and organization improved, it does not represent all of the experience I have today. I actually think this showed me something important about AI. It can only work with the information I give it. It can make an old resume look better, but it cannot magically know everything that has changed in my life since I wrote it.

After this experience, I would definitely use AI again to help me start or revise an important professional document, but I would not just copy and paste whatever it gives me. I would give it detailed instructions, read everything carefully, and make changes so the final document still sounds like me. I think AI could do a better job of keeping the writer's natural voice instead of making everything sound so polished and similar. This experience also made me question where the line is between AI helping someone improve their writing and AI actually doing too much of the writing for them. I think that is something I will pay more attention to when I use AI in the future.

The biggest thing I would change is the layout. Right now, your job descriptions are mostly paragraphs, so I would turn those into bullet points. That would make it much easier for someone looking at your resume to quickly see what you did at each job.

I would also take out your date of birth, full street address, and the addresses and phone numbers for your previous employers. You really only need your city/state, phone number, and email at the top.

Your wording could also be cleaned up a little. You repeat phrases like "excellent customer service" and "positive relationships" quite a few times. We can keep those ideas but make each job description a little different.

Since you have both Jacksonville University and Syracuse University listed, I would make sure the wording makes it clear that you transferred rather than making it look like you're currently attending both schools. I wouldn't change that without knowing the exact details, though.

I would also consider whether you still want babysitting on there. It shows responsibility and that you've worked consistently for a long time, so it isn't necessarily bad to include. But if you eventually have more professional experience to replace it with, that would probably be one of the first things I would remove.

I'd keep the activities section because it shows leadership and involvement, especially your Director of Administration position with Tri Delta.

Okay. This is an old resume so that's why some of the stuff is outdated. I don't want to add my newer work experience right now.

The resume looks much more organized now, but it's still clearly based on the stage you were at when you originally wrote it. If you ever wanted to turn it into your current resume later, that's when I would update the experience and education sections.

Can we also make the beginning sound a little more like me? I don't really like the word "summary" and I feel like the first part still sounds kind of generic.

Definitely. We could even remove the summary completely. A summary isn't required, especially if you feel like it's just repeating things that already show up in your skills and experience.

If you want to keep one, I would make it shorter:

That stays much closer to the personality you described in your original resume.
